GAME PREVIEW

It is hard to think of a time in recent history when there has been a greater gap between Germany and England.

The world champions, under the guidance of 11-year coach Joachim Low, are a well-oiled machine. Low is spoilt for choice when it comes to talent but whoever he does pick fits in to a well-established framework.

Germany have a basic identity, usually lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but the versatility of players like Joshua Kimmich enables them to make adjust their shape as needed.

England, on the other hand, have felt fairly close to square one since Sam Allardyce was dismissed before he could even really get started.

There is quality at Southgate's disposal - though much of it will miss this match due to injury - but no clearly defined plan A that England can build from.

They go into this pair of international friendlies likely to continue their experiment with a three-man defence in a bid to establish some semblance of consistency ahead of next summer's World Cup.
