Reyna breaks DFB-Pokal record with stunning first goal for Dortmund

American star Giovanni Reyna scored a stunning second-half strike to open his Borussia Dortmund account while making a little history in the process.

Reyna came off the bench with Dortmund down two goals in Tuesday's 3-2 DFB-Pokal loss to Werder Bremen on Tuesday.

The teenager proceeded to provide a fantastic goal, with Reyna beating a man off the dribble before curling a shot into the upper-righthand corner of the net in the 78th minute.

The goal brought the scoreline back to 3-2 on the day while also sealing Reyna the record as the youngest-ever goalscorer in the DFB-Pokal.

At just 17 years and 82 days old, Reyna's first goal came in his fourth senior appearance following a trio of Bundesliga matches against Augsburg, Cologne and Union Berlin.

His debut appearance against Augsburg saw Reyna beat Christian Pulisic's record for youngest-ever American to feature in the Bundesliga.

“I’ve always played in a care-free way, but in a good way. I just try to score goals and create for my team and be calm under pressure," he told Dortmund’s matchday magazine last week. "I’ve always played a few years up, so that’s helped me developing here with the first team and getting more comfortable with it.“

"I have to play my game and be confident in myself because I know I’m capable of being here. That’s why I’m here. I need to do my thing, be creative and play the way I know how to play.

"I’m still so young so I know it’s going to take time. I’ve got a lot of goals coming up this season and throughout my career. This season I want to help the team in any way I can, get minutes and hopefully score my first goals, first assists. And to try to win the Bundesliga this season.”

Reyna, son of former U.S. men's national team standout Claudio, has represented the U.S. up to the U-17 level, having featured at the U-17 World Cup.

Joining Reyna on the scoresheet was Erling Haaland, who scored his eighth goal in just his fourth appearance for Dortmund as he and Reyna have broken through as Dortmund's supersubs in recent weeks.

Borussia Dortmund will now turn focus towards the Bundesliga, with the club currently sitting in third place three points behind league-leaders Bayern Munich.

Next up for the club is a visit to Bayer Leverkusen and a home match against Eintracht Frankfurt before focus turns towards a marquee clash with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions league.
