'I'll hum along' - Emma Hayes prepared for 'weird' national anthem moment as USWNT boss gears up for England showdown

<p>The legendary ex-Chelsea boss <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/emma-hayes-reveals-stress-chelsea-job-made-her-unwell-got-mojo-back-uswnt/blta5bef4ca1659e0dc" target="_blank">took charge of the United States women's national team after exiting Stamford Bridge</a> at the end of the 2023-24 season. Since taking the reins, Hayes has done a phenomenal job with her team as she guided them to an Olympic gold medal in Paris in the summer.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>The Olympic champions are now preparing to take on reigning European champions England in an international friendly and ahead of the highly anticipated clash, the 48-year-old is caught in two minds over singing the national anthem of the country she works in and of her birthplace. Hayes, however, has found a solution to avoid any controversy.</p>

<p>Speaking to reporters, the record WSL-winning manager described the situation as a "weird moment", as she said: "It’s something I will hum along to as I always have done, being the English person that I am. I’ll also do the same for the American national anthem because I love both anthems."</p>

<p>After facing the Lionesses on Saturday, Hayes' USWNT will play their next friendly game against the Netherlands on December 3.</p>
