<p>Thousands flocked to the Loftus Versfeld Stadium to cheer their respective teams as Mamelodi Sundowns and Esperance chased a win in the first leg of the Caf Champions League quarter-final outing. </p><p>It was the reigning Premier Soccer League champions who managed a slim 1-0 win over the Beasts of Africa.</p><p>However, fans clashed after the match, and <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-za/lists/hero-brave-mamelodi-sundowns-fan-details-how-he-saved-the-life-of-an-esperance-supporter-during-skirmishes-at-loftus-versfeld-after-caf-champions-league-match/blt4ed810386fd5bad8" target="_blank">it almost turned fatal</a>. </p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Sundowns were the home team, meaning they were solely responsible for the safety of the fans.</p><p>However, there was a loophole that was fully utilised by the hooligans. </p><p>In a statement to the public, Masandawana have apologised for the incident and promised thorough investigations.</p><p>They have further explained why the fans should not be worried about attending games in the next home assignments. </p>
