Anthony Martial’s goal for Manchester United against Everton was the 100th the Old Trafford side have scored against their Merseyside rivals in the Premier League.
The Frenchman added a second for Jose Mourinho’s side midway through the second half, with countryman Paul Pogba having netted in the first when he slotted home the rebound to his own penalty, setting up the 2-1 win.
Martial’s effort brought up a milestone figure for the Red Devils, who have become just the second team to hit three figures against the same opponents.
Unhappily for Everton, they were also on the wrong end of a barrage of goals from Arsenal, who have scored 107 times against them – the most that any Premier League side have managed against one of their opponents.
The Red Devils had gone into the game with an unwelcome first to their name, having had a negative goal difference after nine matches for the first time in the Premier League era.
However, the goals from the French players carried them back into positive figures before a reply from Gylfi Sigurdsson dragged them back to zero as they attempt to rekindle their Champions League qualification aspirations for next season, having fallen seven points off the pace at the beginning of the weekend.
Arsenal’s slip at Crystal Palace, where their 11-match winning streak ground to a halt following a 2-2 draw, provided a window of opportunity that they took.
Victory also allowed them to leapfrog the Toffees and Wolves into eighth place ahead of a trip to Bournemouth next Saturday.
