<p>Shortly after Viktor Gyokeres gave the Portuguese side a 1-0 lead, England midfielder Gomes received a second yellow in the 40th minute in Lisbon. As a result, the former Manchester United youngster became the <a href="https://x.com/Squawka_Live/status/1836130227749056833" target="_blank">first player to be sent off in the Champions League</a> this season.</p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Lille went onto lose the game 2-0 as Zeno Debast doubled Sporting's lead in the 65th minute. The 24-year-old Gomes will now miss his side's next monster Champions League game against Real Madrid on October 2.</p>

THE BIGGER PICTURE

<p>Gomes began his career at United and went onto make 10 appearances for their first team before joining Lille permanently in 2021. Since then, he has scored eight goals in 119 games for the Ligue 1 outfit and been capped twice by England.</p>

<p>Gomes will hope to atone for his mistakes when Lille take on Strasbourg in Ligue 1 action on Saturday, followed by an away trip to Le Havre a week later. A few days after that, they lock horns with Champions League holders Madrid at home.</p>
