According to <a href="https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/" target="_blank">RMC Sport</a> journalist Daniel Riolo, the French top-flight has decided to enter into a naming rights sponsorship deal with American fast food chain McDonald's. After the deal is signed the top division will be officially known as Ligue 1 McDonald's.

WHAT HAPPENED?

McDonald's will replace Uber Eats, who have been sponsoring Ligue 1 for the past five years having <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/news/ligue-1-orders-up-32m-uber-eats-naming-rights-deal/75opkzbd16jz1uvkgmb5zsnu2" target="_blank">entered into a deal with the league in 2019</a>. Riolo further revealed that while the food delivery company used to pay €15 to €16m per year, the new deal with McDonald's will see Ligue 1 earn around €20m (£17m) per season for the next three years.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Speaking to <a href="https://rmcsport.bfmtv.com/football/ligue-1/direct-ligue-1-suivez-toute-l-actualite-du-championnat-de-france-en-direct-sur-rmc-sport_LN-202403050294.html" target="_blank">RMC Sport</a>, Riolo said: "They did not want to continue paying at that price… and there was an offer submitted to Vincent Labrune’s office [President of the LFP] with a tidy sum. It’s an offer from McDonald’s. They haven’t yet planned the comms for the junk food and everything, they’re working on it… It’ll be around €60 million over three years, it’s a clear increase."

RMC Sport also adds that the McDonald's deal could help to cushion the blow of <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/kylian-mbappe-psg-divorce-sour-luis-enrique-right-bench-real-madrid-bound-superstar-under-par-performances/blt62d47a4dac7776e4" target="_blank">Kylian Mbappe's imminent transfer to Real Madrid</a>, with the loss of the Paris Saint-Germain star likely to have a negative impact on the league commercially. Reigning Ligue 1 champions PSG are once again favourites to lift the title this season as they enjoy a nine-point lead at the top of the table. The competition will resume on Friday with Nice hosting Montpellier in the first match of the gameweek.
