<p>Martinez was crowned the <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/aston-villa-and-argentina-goalkeeper-emiliano-martinez-retains-yashin-trophy-as-world-s-best-goalkeeper-in-2024/blt47f77564722f26b5" target="_blank">best male goalkeeper on the planet again</a> on Monday night at the Ballon d'Or awards in Paris. The Argentina stopper has enjoyed a great 12 months, helping his national team win the Copa America and qualifying for the Champions League with Aston Villa. Martinez beat off competition from Spain stopper Unai Simon, Real Madrid's Andriy Lunin, Gianluigi Donnarumma of PSG and AC Milan's Mike Maignan to scoop the award.</p><p></p>

WHAT HAPPENED?

<p>Martinez was presented with his trophy by Lautaro Martinez, who finished seventh in the <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/ballon-dor-2024-official-rankings/bltdfc0dfad7cda201f#cs943e4e1b1c926bc2" target="_blank">Ballon d'Or rankings</a> despite being <a href="https://www.goal.com/en/lists/lionel-messi-claims-lautaro-martinez-deserves-ballon-d-or-more-than-anyone-else-inter-striker-argentina-bolivia/blt87368ee635ce6f83" target="_blank">Messi's pick for the main prize</a> after winning the Copa America and the Serie A title with Inter. Spain and Manchester City midfielder <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/ballon-dor-2024-official-rankings/bltdfc0dfad7cda201f" target="_blank">Rodri ended up winning the Ballon d'Or</a>, after pipping Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr to top spot, but Messi was still pleased to see Lautaro attend the ceremony and be recognised for his achievements with club and country.</p><p></p>
