Negotiations between United and Fulham are still ongoing but it's been a frustrating transfer saga for all involved. The Red Devils have rejected three offers for McTominay, despite their need for sales, and are holding out for a package worth £30 million ($38m), according to the <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/man-united-transfer-news-scott-mctominay-fulham-b2592175.html" target="_blank">Independent</a>.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The arrivals of Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro have left United needing to sell <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/man-utd-psr-danger-huge-losses-latest-accounts/blt99e4aa32926c01de#csac233df608955efb" target="_blank">in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules</a> and pursue other transfers. They want to make five more sales but have so far struggled to shift those available, including Jadon Sancho, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro and Victor Lindelof. And a deal for McTominay isn't likely at present - the report adds that Fulham haven't gotten close to United's asking price.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

United have struggled to shift their deadwood due to a slow market. There's been less Saudi Pro League activity this summer and other Premier League clubs have PSR considerations. In addition, some of the first-team players at Old Trafford are on hefty wages that interested parties are unwilling to match - <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/recruitment-dumb-money-world-class-stadium-man-utd-catch-up-city-off-field/bltd3b2cd3ccba5e78e" target="_blank">another problem caused by the previous recruitment policy</a>.

The transfer window doesn't close until August 30 so United and Fulham still have time to strike a deal. The Scotland international would join Ryan Sessegnon, Emile Smith Rowe and Jorge Cuenca among the summer arrivals at Craven Cottage.
