Aguero matches Rooney's Manchester derby record as City star scores against Utd once again

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has matched the achievements of Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney by recording an eighth derby goal.

The Argentine has enjoyed meetings with the Red Devils down the years, and has regularly been a thorn in their side.

That proved to be the case again on his most recent outing against the men from Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho took United to the Etihad Stadium aware that containing Aguero would be key to their hopes of taking anything from a highly-charged contest.

He was, however, to see Aguero distract defenders as David Silva opened the scoring before netting City’s second of the game himself.

A clever interchange with Riyad Mahrez freed the prolific frontman into space behind Victor Lindelof and he rifled an effort through the hands of David de Gea from a tight angle.

Nobody has recorded more Manchester derby goals in the Premier League than Aguero, with Rooney having been joined at the top of that particular chart.

Aguero netted his first goal against United on a memorable derby date from October 2011.

In his first season with City, the South American was on target in a 6-1 mauling of the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

Another effort arrived in an FA Cup clash that season, before hitting the back of the net again away from home in April 2013.

A brace was delivered against the Red Devils at the Etihad in September of that year and a match-winning strike recorded in a home date the following season.

The 2014-15 campaign also saw him net twice at the Theatre of Dreams, but in a losing cause.

He had drawn a blank in derby outings since then, but is now back in the groove and chasing down another title with Pep Guardiola’s Blues.
