Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy admitted that his men were outclassed by Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final match on Sunday.
Two goals from Hendrick Ekstein and Dumisani Zuma helped Amakhosi secure a 2-0 won over the Citizens at the Mbombela Stadium.
“It was a great spectacle, first of all, I think Chiefs thoroughly deserved it. From the start to finish, I think they showed more desire than us,” McCarthy told SuperSport TV.
“The moment got the better of us you know. I think full Stadium, Chiefs support like we want to see and yeah, the desire they had, they were first to every ball,” he reacted.
“For our boys, it’s a lesson learned and that if you want to be champions, to win the Nedbank, if you want to win the league it’s this kind of a performance that you must put in. The desire has to be there to win every game not just when it suits us,” he said.
“Today we were well beaten by a better team, I don’t have excuses and I can’t talk tactical because they got them spot on. We lacked something today,” responded the former forward.
“Yeah when we talk about BMT, big match temperament, sometimes you don’t let the occasion play but you control the occasion because you are on the pitch and be a little bit more composed, keep calm and I talked about it the whole time because I know Chiefs players are used to this," he added
"We lacked that and it showed on the pitch, lost the ball easily…that was not the team that I am coaching in the first half,” noted McCarthy.
“With that said, you can’t take away from Chiefs. The desire, they played like a team that had everything to lose. So they deserved it and I wish them well in the next round, if they play like this, they will go all the way to win the tournament - it’s nice to see them coming back,” concluded McCarthy.
