Emery’s disastrous record against Madrid and Barcelona will worry PSG fans

Paris Saint-Germain fans will be looking for reasons to be optimistic ahead of their meeting with Real Madrid on Tuesday. However, Unai Emery's record against Los Blancos and also versus Barcelona is unlikely to provide much cause for cheer.

When the draw for the Champions League last 16 paired the two teams, many believed PSG were favourites to advance to the last eight. After all, Real's form in La Liga had been indifferent, while the Ligue 1 leaders were scoring for fun.

But Los Blancos tend to save their best for the continental competition and the 12-time winners found a way to win the first match at the Santiago Bernabeu – even though PSG took the lead and dominated for much of the night.

That gave Real the psychological edge and, to make matters worse for Emery, he has since lost Neymar to injury, with the Brazil forward back in his homeland and out for three months, while Kylian Mbappe is also doubtful for Tuesday's game with an ankle problem.

Whoever is available on Tuesday, Emery desperately needs a positive result. Because failure to overturn the first-leg deficit will mean he will almost certainly be out of a job in the summer.

The first-leg match was Emery's 21st as a coach against Real. And the 3-1 loss was his 15th defeat in those games. Of the remaining six, he has won five and drew the other. All of those victories came at home, with 10 losses and a draw at the Bernabeu.

His first win against Real was a 2-0 success as Almeria boss in 2007-08. The following season, as Valencia coach, Emery led his new team to a 3-2 win over Real at Mestalla in the Spanish Supercopa, although they lost the second leg 4-2 at the Bernabeu.

And, later in the campaign, there was another 3-0 victory over Madrid at Mestalla, this time in La Liga, though that came after Los Blancos' damaging defeat at home to Barcelona, a 6-2 reverse which was the start of a run of five straight losses.

The remaining two wins both came with Sevilla at the Sanchez Pizjuan: a 2-1 success against Carlo Ancelotti's side in 2013-14 and a 3-2 victory versus Rafa Benitez's Real in 2015-16, prior to Zinedine Zidane's arrival as coach.

In total, Emery's teams have scored 31 goals in the 21 meetings with Real Madrid and conceded 54. And, against Barcelona, his record is even worse, with just two wins in 25 games, losing 17 and drawing six, with 30 scored and 64 let in.

One of those victories was the famous 4-0 result for PSG at home to Barca in the last 16 of the 2016-17 Champions League, which had looked like the French side's big breakthrough in Europe until they capitulated with a 6-1 loss in the second leg at Camp Nou to crash out of Europe.

This time around, without Neymar, Emery needs to mastermind something similar to that first fixture in last year's competition. But his record suggests his side may struggle at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.
